Chris Van Alstine
Senior Landscape Architectural Technologist, Urban Design Certificate
Chris Van Alstine is a Senior Landscape Architectural Technologist and Designer based in Edmonton with over 20 years of experience in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. He is a graduate of Landscape Architectural Technology from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and holds a Certificate in Urban Design from Simon Fraser University. His breadth of experience ranges from private gardens to complex, multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, including elements of low-impact development, environmental remediation, and principles of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), among others. Throughout his career, he has been involved in all aspects of projects, ranging from public engagement and concept development to detailed design and construction administration.
Chris is fascinated by the science of plants and natural systems, as well as by the positive psychological impacts of green spaces and natural areas on people. He recognises landscapes as dynamic spaces that continue to grow and evolve over time and believes in working with nature to create spaces that maintain beauty and resilience throughout their life cycle. In his spare time, he maintains a small but extensive private garden, with over forty species of hardy trees, shrubs, and perennials, that plays host to innumerable invertebrates, birds, and small mammals, as well as the occasional rescue dog.
