68 Sheppard Ave.W, Toronto, ON (Indigenous Women’s Shelter)
The City of Toronto’s first women’s shelter will be constructed in a vibrant area of North York, close to services and amenities, to support the approximately 80 women and children who will live there. SpruceLab is leading Indigenous engagement and providing landscape architectural services, working closely with Native Women’s Resources Centre of Toronto (Operator), Toronto Shelter and Support Services, and the project team (led by Montgomery Sisam, as one of four shelter projects). The landscape (including a green roof amenity space) will be designed to be sustainable (with green stormwater infrastructure), welcoming, healing (with Indigenous design elements including Traditional Medicines), and safe. The project is part of the City’s Council-approved Homelessness Services Capital Infrastructure Strategy (See City of Toronto information here.)
