Tkaronto Tour

The Urban Land Institute Toronto (ULI) held an event late 2019 for land professionals to meet and listen to Indigenous perspectives, to help improve relationships and advance reconciliation, called Building Better: Indigenous Collaboration in Urban Environments. “Indigenous leaders, city planners, developers, and other city building enthusiasts, the audience heard from speakers and a panel about the required cultural shifts or actions to appropriately bring Indigenous consultation to the forefront of a growing cityscape, while also fostering inclusivity in development processes.” (Source: ULI Toronto). For the subsequent international 2020 ULI Spring Meeting, an Indigenous day long ‘Tkaronto Tour’ was planned to visit land and water sites of significance and to hear from Indigenous leaders. (Note: Due to travel restrictions the in-person meeting was cancelled and the tour has been deferred).

(Sheila advised on both events, and co-led the development of the Tkaronto Tour with Gail Shillingford, DIALOG, and with the support of Indigenous advisors, Andre Morriseau, Donald Corbiere, and Jeremy Caribou. The hope is that the tour can be resurrected, potentially with First Story Toronto leading this work).
