World Wildlife Fund - Claremont, ON Seed Orchard
SpruceLab Inc. is working with the World Wildlife Fund - Canada (WWF) on one of their pollinator plant seed orchard pilot projects, for a project installed in Claremont, ON (see video here). This initiative is supported by the Ontario Plant Restoration Alliance, and is designed to help address the shortage of source-identified seeds for local native species. The intention is to learn about the process of planning, installing, and tending a community-based seed orchard, with a special fall harvest event for the seed collection. The Claremont project involves 200 plants in two planting beds (approximately 1.8m x 3m in size), with one bed for planting directly into the earth, and the other for planting in a 300cm high raised wood bed. All plants are from Native Plants in Claremont, who provided advice on species selection and plant care. The project is located on a private rural property, and involves the help of the property owners and many volunteers who welcome the opportunity to work with the earth, plants, and pollinators, and to learn from this project to help advance this biodiversity supporting work. This project is funded in part by WWF - Canada, and is supported by Zeitdice for the cloud-based time lapse documentation.
