Pebble Beach East Campground, Soup Harbour ON

In 2023, concerned with the rezoning for a development of a 38.2 ha area (Soup Harbour, Prince Edward County) pressured the owner of Pebble Beach East Campground to work with them to protect the adjacent Provincially significant wetland, and the smaller swamp / marsh wetland complexes on the property (settled by the Ontario Land Tribunal). SpruceLab led research and the design of several wildlife corridors to provide access for creatures to move through the neighbourhood, to connect them through meadowlands to exiting forested areas, wetlands (marsh/swamp), and the Lake Ontario shoreline (working closely with Trophic Design). The provincially endangered brown bat and the threatened barn swallow were of concern, as well as the need for wildlife to move through the lands when the housing is built. Designs include native plant species (plants and seed mixes) with extensive tree plantings to complement the existing flora on site (e.g. trembling aspen, eastern white cedar, basswood, and red cedar). The design was completed in 2024 and approved by all parties, but the implementation has not commenced.
