Kitchener Public Library’s Southwest Community Library

This proposed $10.1 M net-zero community library on 0.9ha will become a vibrant community hub for the adjacent neighbourhoods and will feature green infrastructure such as green roofs, bioswales, and solar panels. SpruceLab Inc. led Indigenous and community / stakeholder engagement, and produced the landscape architectural design, working closely with mcCallumSather (prime consultant), 4 Directions of Conservation, and Trophic Design on this project. This ‘learning landscape’, is designed for outdoor reading, gatherings, Indigenous ceremony, and classroom activities. The inclusion of food forest species and raised wooden community gardens also offers educational opportunities tied to the indoor kitchen. The project is scheduled to go to construction tender in 2022, be constructed in 2023, and opened in 2023/2024. An open house was held in April 2022 where the building and landscape design were publicly revealed. See Kitchener Public Library’s website about this project here.
